Property of Water Notes
The Properties of Water Notes:
Hydrogen Bonding
Water is a Universal Solute
Effect of Heat on Water.
- Water Molecules are made up of Two hydrogen Atom and One Oxygen Atom.
- Atoms consists of Protons, Electrons, and Neutrons.
- Atoms are neutrally charged because the number of protons and electrons are even.
- Unevenly charged atoms are called Ions.
- Each Hydrogen Atom shares its single electron the oxygen.
- The Oxygen shares one of its electrons with hydrogen.
- Shared Electrons spend ore time around the oxygen than the hydrogen. The Hydrogen's end carries a slightly positive charge (Polar Molecule) and the Oxygen.
Hydrogen Bonding
- The weak attraction between the weakly positive hydrogen atoms and the weakly negative oxygen atoms at a different molecule.
- Hydrogen Bonding is responsible for the unique properties of water.
Water is a Universal Solute
- Water is attracted with other water molecules.
- This helps trees pull water high up.
- Cohesion is water that is attracted with each other.
- The attraction of water molecules to themselves helps to create a "film" on the surface of bodies of water.
- Surface Tension is that definition. ^^^^^^^
- Water can also be attracted to other materials (Adhesion)
- Heat is Measured if the total Kinetic energy of the atoms and molecules measured in.
Effect of Heat on Water.
- High Heat of Vaporization= Hydrogen bonds must be broken so water can absorb a lot of heat without changing phase.
- Evaporates Slowly = the cooling effect (sweating).
- High Latent Heat of Fusion =a lot of heat released when water freezes and a lot of heat is absorbed when the ice melts.
- Water temperature is more stable than air temp. and Water Moderate Climates.
- Water has a High Specific Heat - This means that water can absorb a large amount of het before it begins to get hot.
- Density is Mass/Volume.
- Density is also how much stuff is being taken.... how much space is being taken. O_O V
